Heen Bovitiya, often spoken about these days, is believed to provide remarkable health benefits. It is said to be especially beneficial for the liver. Many people drink Heen Bovitiya porridge (kenda) as a way of consuming it. Among the various medicinal plants found in Sri Lanka, Heen Bovitiya (Osbeckia octandra) holds a special place. This plant, scientifically identified as Osbeckia octandra, is an indigenous flowering plant of Sri Lanka. It is commonly seen in paddy field bunds, scrublands, and riverbanks.
🌿 What is Heen Bovitiya?
Heen Bovitiya grows as a small shrub with slender but strong branches. The leaves are small, rough in texture, and greenish-brown on the outer surface. The plant bears light purple flowers with five petals, which are quite beautiful. These purple flowers are also recognized as the provincial flower of the Southern Province.
The plant reproduces through small seeds found in its pods, as well as from stem cuttings. Its tiny, reddish-purple berry-like fruits are edible. The young leaves and tender stems are also consumed as food.
🌎 Why is Heen Bovitiya Important to Sri Lanka?
- Heen Bovitiya is very important to Sri Lanka mainly because it is an endemic plant, meaning it naturally grows only in Sri Lanka and not in any other country.
- In addition, in Ayurveda and traditional medicine, this plant holds a very high medicinal value.
🔍 Different Types of Bovitiya
Shall we now take a closer look at the Heen Bovitiya plant?
There are several species of Bovitiya, such as:
- Maha Bovitiya (Large Bovitiya)
- Wäl Bovitiya (Climbing Bovitiya)
- Mee Bovitiya
- Ela Bovitiya
Among these, Heen Bovitiya is considered the most medicinally valuable. It grows as a small shrub, with leaves and flowers of normal size.
Other types like Mee Bovitiya and Gal Bovitiya grow as medium-sized shrubs, often found in mountainous areas, with somewhat rough-textured leaves.
Maha Bovitiya is comparatively large, with larger leaves as well.
Kiri Bovitiya has smaller leaves compared to the others.
🌱 Does Heen Bovitiya Increase Kapha? Is There Any Problem?
In Ayurveda, whether a plant increases or decreases Kapha dosha depends on its taste (Rasa), qualities (Guna), potency (Veerya), and post-digestive effect (Vipaka).
For Heen Bovitiya (Osbeckia octandra):
- Rasa (Taste): Bitter and astringent → generally reduces Kapha dosha.
- Guna (Qualities): Light and dry → helps reduce Kapha dosha.
- Veerya (Potency): Cooling → balances Pitta dosha. However, in individuals who naturally have an excessively cold constitution, overuse may slightly aggravate Kapha dosha.
- Vipaka (Post-digestive effect): Pungent → also helps reduce Kapha dosha.
Therefore, according to Ayurvedic principles, Heen Bovitiya generally does not increase Kapha. Instead, it usually helps to reduce Kapha imbalance. However, in people who already suffer from strong Kapha-related disorders, excessive use may sometimes increase Kapha symptoms.
🔬 Medicinal Compounds in Heen Bovitiya
Heen Bovitiya contains important bioactive compounds such as:
- Flavonoids (quercetin, kaempferol)
- Tannins
- Phenolic compounds
- Saponins
- Alkaloids
These compounds play a major role in liver protection, blood sugar regulation, and blood purification.
Scientific studies have confirmed that Heen Bovitiya possesses the following properties:
- Hepatoprotective (protects the liver)
- Antioxidant
- Anti-inflammatory
- Antibacterial
- Antiviral
- Hypoglycemic (reduces blood sugar)
- Antimalarial
🩺 Effect of Heen Bovitiya on Liver Function
The liver stores excess lipids (fat) and later uses them when required. However, because we often consume foods rich in fats and chemicals, the liver continuously accumulates excess fat. This condition is known as fatty liver (hepatic fat deposition).
Heen Bovitiya helps improve this condition.
- Its flavonoids, polyphenols, and tannins accelerate the breakdown of stored lipids, thereby reducing excess fat in the liver.
- It enhances hepatocyte (liver cell) function, which in turn improves fat metabolism.
- Flavonoids, phenolic compounds, and anthocyanins present in the plant prevent the oxidation of harmful LDL cholesterol in the body.
Studies have confirmed that Heen Bovitiya helps to:
- Reduce total cholesterol, LDL, and triglyceride levels
- Increase HDL (good cholesterol) levels
- Lower ALT and AST enzyme levels, which are markers of liver damage
💪 Other Health Benefits
- Improves digestion and reduces gastric irritation and constipation
- Stimulates appetite
- Helps in blood sugar control (useful in managing diabetes)
🍽️ Can Heen Bovitiya Only Be Taken as Porridge?
No. Heen Bovitiya can be consumed in several ways — as porridge, as a rice preparation, as sambol (condiment), or even as a salad.
1. As Porridge (Kenda)
When preparing porridge, use a traditional rice variety. Add coconut milk, salt, and other required ingredients, boil for a while, and when it is almost ready, add the Heen Bovitiya extract and continue to boil briefly before drinking.
2. As Tea
Add about two teaspoons of the powder into hot boiled water, cover it for a short time, and then consume as a medicinal tea preparation.
3. As Ambula
A lesser-known fact is that Heen Bovitiya can also be made into sambol. To prepare it: sauté onions, garlic, curry leaves, and dried chilies in coconut milk until it thickens, then add the finely chopped Heen Bovitiya leaves, cook for a short while, and prepare as Ambula.
4. As Salad
Yes, you can even make salad with Heen Bovitiya. The young leaves and tender stems can be used in the same way as other traditional leafy salads.
