Why Do Young Children Catch Colds So Often? 🤔
(The Truth According to Ayurveda!)

"Why does my child get sick so often?" According to Ayurveda, this is usually not something to panic about. It is considered a natural characteristic of early childhood.

If you have a little child at home, you’ve probably noticed that they seem to catch a cold or develop a cough almost every week. You may have even wondered, "Why does my child get sick so often?" According to Kaumarabhritya (the Ayurvedic branch that focuses on child health), there are several main reasons for this. Let’s take a look.

👶 1. Childhood Is the "Kapha" Stage of Life

According to Ayurveda, human life is divided into three stages, each dominated by one of the three doshas:

  • Childhood: Kapha Dosha predominates
  • Adulthood/Youth: Pitta Dosha predominates
  • Old Age: Vata Dosha predominates

During childhood, the body is growing rapidly, so Kapha Dosha naturally becomes dominant. When Kapha is high, it increases mucus production, congestion, and heaviness in the body. As a result, even slight exposure to cold weather can easily trigger a runny nose or a cold.

🔥 2. A Baby's Digestive Fire (Agni) Is Still Weak

According to Ayurveda, our immunity is closely linked to the strength of our Agni (Digestive Fire). In young children, Agni is still delicate and developing. Because of this, they may struggle to properly digest foods such as:

  • Cold food or drinks taken directly from the refrigerator
  • Sugary snacks, chocolates, and ice cream
  • Sweet or dairy-based foods consumed at night

When food is not digested properly, it forms Ama (undigested toxins) inside the body. As Ama combines with excess Kapha (mucus), it can block the body's channels, leading to colds, nasal congestion, and coughs.

🛡️ 3. Immunity (Ojas) Is Still Developing

A child's natural immunity—known in Ayurveda as Ojas—is still developing. Because of this, even small changes in weather, exposure to cold wind, or getting caught in the rain can easily aggravate Kapha and increase mucus production.

💚 Common Habits That Can Trigger Colds in Children:

  • Dietary Habits: Giving refrigerated food or cold drinks, ice cream and oily foods, or giving milk and other dairy-based meals at night.
  • Lifestyle Habits: Keeping children in very cold air-conditioned environments, leaving their hair wet after a bath, or bathing them in the evening.

In the next article, we'll discuss simple home remedies that can be used during the early stages of a cold, as well as healthy habits that can help reduce the chances of children catching colds! 🥰
