Hemorrhoids & Constipation: The Mirror to Your Internal Health š©ŗ
Today, we are going to talk about a topic that many people feel embarrassed to discuss openly, but is extremely important for our overall health.
āļø As an Ayurvedic doctor, Iād like to share a few common questions I frequently encounter. While many people feel embarrassed (š« š°) to discuss this openly, it is an extremely important topic for our overall health.
š¤ 1. Is constipation the main cause of hemorrhoids (piles)?
Yes, constipation is indeed one of the primary causes of hemorrhoids.
- Why does this happen? When you have constipation, stools become hard. This forces you to strain excessively during bowel movements. This increased pressure causes the blood vessels around the anal canal to swell, which over time develop into hemorrhoids.
- Other causes: š© Apart from constipation, sitting for long hours, insufficient water intake, lack of fiber in your diet, pregnancy, and obesity can also trigger both constipation and piles.
š© 2. Is passing motion just a daily routine?
Most people view bowel movements as just another morning habit. However, in Ayurveda, we say, "Your stool is a mirror that reflects your internal health." You can easily tell whether your body is healthy based on how you pass stool.
According to Ayurveda, if your Jatharagni (digestive fire) is functioning well, bowel movements occur on time, smoothly, and without pain.
Signs of a Healthy System:
- Passing motion easily at least once or twice daily.
- Stool that is soft (shaped like a ripe banana) rather than too hard or watery.
- No burning sensation or pain during passage.
Signs of Potential Illness:
- Hard stool or going days without a bowel movement (risk of constipation/piles).
- Stool containing blood or mucus (indicating piles, fissures, or digestive tract issues).
- Excessively watery stool (indicating indigestion or diarrhea).
š± How to Prevent Constipation
Incorporating the right foods and habits is your best defense against constipation and hemorrhoids. š«š§ šš„¬š½šš¶ļøš„„
- Kohila (Lasia spinosa): Highly regarded in Ayurveda as a natural remedy for piles.
- Okra (Ladies' Fingers): Its mucilaginous (slimy) texture helps stool glide smoothly through the intestines.
- Pumpkin & Luffa (Ridge Gourd): Rich in water and fiber, helping to stimulate bowel movements.
- Winged Beans & Native Tubers: Native yam varieties like Inala, Kiri Ala, and sweet potatoes are packed with natural dietary fiber.
- Turkey Berry (Thibbotu) & Tampala: Local vegetables and greens that boost digestive tract activity.
- Gotukola & Mukunuwenna: Consuming these daily as a fresh salad or side dish helps relieve constipation.
- Sour Bananas (Ambul) & Red Bananas: Eating an Ambul banana on an empty stomach in the morning softens stool (note: unripe bananas can worsen constipation).
- Papaya: Contains the enzyme Papain, which aids digestive flow.
- Wood Apple (Divul) & Bael (Beli): Excellent for cleansing the bowels and widely used in Ayurveda for piles and constipation.
- Avocado: Provides healthy fats and fiber that soften the stool.
- Amberella & Veralu (Ceylon Olive): Eaten fresh or cooked in curries, these help flush the digestive tract.
- Kothalahimbutu & Weniwelgeta Water: Boiled herbal infusions that reduce internal inflammation and smooth digestion.
- Bael Flower (Belimal) & Ranawara Tea: Morning herbal teas that stimulate the bowels for easier elimination.
- Gotukola / Mukunuwenna Porridge (Kolakenda): Drinking herbal porridge on an empty stomach cools the digestive tract and delivers essential fiber.
- Carrot & Beetroot Juices: Helps speed up intestinal motility.
- Roasted Ginger Tea: Ignites the digestive fire (Jatharagni), relieving bloating and constipation.
- Hydration (š«š„): Drinking a glass of warm water right after waking up stimulates intestinal contraction (peristalsis).
- Toilet Posture (š½): Using mobile phones on the toilet leads to prolonged sitting, which increases rectal pressure. Elevating your feet slightly on a small stool creates a squatting posture that makes passing motion much easier.
