HEALTH AWARENESS 💡
Did you know there are different stages of
varicose veins?
Varicose veins are not just a cosmetic issue; they progress through distinct clinical stages. Early detection is key to preventing permanent skin damage and open wounds.

▪️ Stage 1: Spider Veins
Small red or blue lines appear on the skin surface. They often look like a spider web, which is why they are called Spider Veins.
Usually no pain. But some people may feel slight itching or a mild burning sensation. 😕
👉 This is the early stage, and very important to notice!
▪️ Stage 2: Large Varicose Veins
Veins become enlarged, twisted, and bulge out from the skin. They are usually dark blue or purple.
- Heavy feeling in the legs
- Pain after standing for a long time 😓
- Throbbing sensation
- Night cramps in the legs
▪️ Stage 3: Swelling (Edema)
Fluid leaks into surrounding tissues due to poor blood flow, causing swelling in the ankles and lower legs.
- Shoes feel tight in the evening
- Marks from socks stay on the skin
- Swelling reduces when you lift your legs 😢
▪️ Stage 4: Skin Changes
Poor blood circulation affects the skin. The area around the ankle may turn dark brown or reddish.
- Dry, thick, or leathery skin
- Severe itching
- Skin becomes thin and easily injured
▪️ Stage 5 & 6: Venous Ulcers (Wounds)
This is the most serious stage. 😰 Small injuries can turn into wounds that do not heal easily.
- Stage 5: A wound has healed but left a scar
- Stage 6: An open wound that is still not healing 😨
These wounds take a long time to heal because blood circulation is very poor.
🧠 Simple Explanation
The veins in your legs work like one-way valves, carrying blood back to the heart 🫀.
[Image / Diagram: Showing a cross-section of normal vein valves versus weak valves where blood pools backward causing varicose pressure]
When these valves become weak, blood flows backward and collects in the legs. This pressure causes veins to enlarge and leads to varicose veins.
